Kandani Shrine Main Hall: A Dated Sanctuary of 1219

Kandani Shrine Main Hall (神谷神社本殿, Kandani Jinja Honden) is a three-bay nagare-style shrine sanctuary built in 1219 in Kandani-cho, Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture, and was designated a National Treasure in 1955.

The characters 神谷 are read Kandani here, not Kamiya. The construction date comes from an ink inscription on the underside of the exposed ridge beam. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls Kandani Shrine Main Hall the oldest surviving three-bay nagare-style sanctuary and notes that its original materials are well preserved.

It was first protected under the pre-war system on 29 August 1904, which stands as its date of designation as an Important Cultural Property, and it was designated a National Treasure under the present law on 2 February 1955. Sakaide City points out that it is one of very few National Treasure buildings in Kagawa.

The shrine itself is said to have been founded or revived in 812 by Ato no Otari, an uncle of the monk Kukai, though the details are uncertain. Its name does appear in Heian-period sources, the chronicle Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku and the register of shrines in the Engishiki, so its antiquity is secure.

Why It Is a National Treasure

Two things make Kandani Shrine Main Hall exceptional: an inscription fixes its date, and it keeps the form and much of the fabric of the early Kamakura period. Sakaide City explains that a Taisho-era repair uncovered ridge tags, one of which records the rebuilding of the main hall in Kenpo 7, that is 1219.

Later repairs can be traced through ridge tags as well: in 1540, 1568, 1660 and 1759. An unbroken record of repairs like this makes the building's history unusually clear.

In the nagare style, the roof sweeps forward in one long curve and continues down over the front canopy. It is one of the most common forms for Shinto main halls, which is exactly why this building matters: no other three-bay example survives from as early as the early Kamakura period, so it serves as the reference point for the style's early form.

What to Look For

The posts of the core structure are round and carry simple boat-shaped brackets (funahijiki). The gables are decorated with a truss of crossed struts, the central front bay has a plank door, and a second doorway is set into the left side. A side entrance like this is unusual for a sanctuary three bays wide.

The posts of the front canopy (kohai) are square and carry three-bearing brackets (mitsudo-gumi), with every edge chamfered. Sakaide City singles out the round posts finished with a spear plane (yariganna) and the chamfered square canopy posts as clear expressions of Kamakura building style. When you look past the worship hall toward the sanctuary, watch for the contrast between the round posts of the core and the squared posts of the canopy.

The roof is cypress bark. On 27 September 2022 lightning struck the chigi, the crossed finials on the ridge, and the fire burned about 47 square metres of the bark roof. Repairs, carried out with national subsidies, began in 2023 and were completed on 30 September 2025. The roof was fully re-covered and lightning protection was installed.

Reporting on the finished work noted that some timbers still carry scorch marks and that wood believed to date from the original construction remains in place. Under the new bark, an 800-year-old frame is still doing its job. Besides the national subsidy, the repair drew on a crowdfunding campaign supported by 971 people.

Visiting Kandani Shrine

Kandani Shrine is at 621 Kandani-cho, Sakaide. The nearest station is Kamogawa on the JR Yosan Line, about 2 kilometres to the southwest in a straight line on the map. The shrine sits in a valley on the way up toward the Goshikidai plateau, and a car or taxi is the easiest way to reach it.

The main hall stands at the back of the precinct, and visitors view it from outside, beyond the worship hall. Neither the shrine's website nor Sakaide City lists an admission fee or fixed viewing hours. The shrine publishes 080-5742-1969 as its contact number.

There is no published rule on photography. This is an active place of worship, so avoid disturbing ceremonies or people at prayer. Fire-prevention facilities have also been installed around the main hall; always respect fences and no-entry signs.
