Kawatsuru Sake Brewery West Brewery
Approach Kan-onji from the town centre and one long wall announces the brewery before anything else does. The West Brewery (Nishi-sakagura) is the largest of the five registered buildings at Kawatsuru Sake Brewery, a two-storey earthen-walled warehouse of about 400 square metres set out north to south along the former Awa Kaido, the old road toward Tokushima.
Kawatsuru was founded in 1891 by Kawahito Seizo, who had run an indigo-dyeing business across the prefectural border in Tokushima before settling beside the Saita River. The West Brewery went up later, in 1918, and grew again around 1935. Its northern half is the shikomi-gura, the hall where the fermentation mash is prepared, and it is unusually long, running thirteen ken (a traditional bay measure) along the ridge. The southern half, once the pressing area for the lees, was rebuilt after the Muroto Typhoon tore through Shikoku in 1934.
The construction is dozo, a thick earthen-walled technique in which timber framing is packed and plastered to guard against fire and to hold an even temperature inside. Here it carries a tiled gabled roof and a west face broken by small windows set at regular intervals along its whole length.
Why It Is Registered
All five Kawatsuru buildings were entered on the national register of Tangible Cultural Properties on 21 August 2002, under the criterion for structures that contribute to the historic landscape of the country. The West Brewery carries registration number 37-0119.
What sets this building apart for historians is its evidence. A dated ink inscription survives on the ridge timber (the jimune bokusho), which is why the 1918 construction can be stated with confidence rather than estimated. Firm dating of this kind is rarer than visitors might expect for working industrial buildings, which were repaired and altered without records. The typhoon rebuilding of the southern section is legible in the fabric as well, so the single warehouse reads as two chapters of the same story.
What to Look For
The west elevation is the thing to see, and it is best read on foot. Walk its length and the small windows fall into a steady rhythm across the plaster; that repetition, rather than any single ornament, is what turns a functional store into a piece of townscape. Locals have long used it to orient themselves on the way in from central Kan-onji.
Behind the buildings runs the Saita River, whose groundwater still feeds the brewing. The brewery gave the river its affectionate second name, takarada-gawa, the river that brings treasure to the fields. Stand at the rear and the reason a brewer chose this spot becomes plain.
The working buildings are not generally open to the public. The adjacent Kawatsuru Museum keeps regular hours, and the whole compound can sometimes be entered during events, so it is worth checking ahead before a visit.
