The Worship Hall of Nogi Shrine
The Nogi Shrine Worship Hall (乃木神社拝殿) is a shrine worship hall of 1937 in Bunkyocho, Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 14, 2002 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber hall with a copper roof and a building area of 104 square metres; registration number 37-0086.
A Hall with Offering Room and Storeroom
The Nogi Shrine Worship Hall, like the main hall, stands on a platform of dressed stone (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its front is five bays across, with the central three open as the entrance. An offering hall projects from the west side, towards the main hall, and a storeroom for ritual vessels juts out to the north-west.
The roof is copper-sheeted (Dōban-buki). Chigi and Katsuogi crown the ridge, and a Chidori-hafu, a small triangular gable, is set into the front slope of the roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered it as a structure that has become a model of design. Despite the front gable, the hall as a whole is unified by the spare, straight-lined manner of the shinmei-style main hall it serves (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
What to Look For
Look at how the chigi and katsuogi on the ridge sit with the gable on the front slope (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The roofline keeps to the straight edges of the main hall, and the triangular gable is its one departure. From the front you can also read the plan: five bays, the middle three opened as the entrance.
Visiting
The Nogi Shrine Worship Hall stands where the approach turns past the shrine office, on the east side of the main hall (Agency for Cultural Affairs). No official information on interior access was found.
