A Large Stone Breakwater of the Late Edo Period
The Miyagahama Port Breakwater (Kankaitei) (宮ヶ浜港防波堤（捍海隄）) is a stone breakwater completed in 1834 at Miyagahama Port, Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, which in 2008 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a stone structure 220 metres long with a stone lantern and five mooring posts, owned by Kagoshima Prefecture and registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
The Ibusuki City archaeological museum gives the reading of its other name as Kankaitei and describes it as a crescent-shaped breakwater on the Miyagahama shore.
Structure
According to the Agency, it is a stone structure 220 metres long around its bend, dog-legged in plan, at Miyagahama Port in the southeast of the Satsuma Peninsula.
The inner southern face and both faces at the tip are stepped for landing, and a stone lantern and mooring posts stand on top.
What to Look For
The Agency values it as a rare large stone breakwater dating back to the end of the Edo period.
The museum notes that a stone monument at Ibusuki Elementary School records its construction: the shallow sea at Miyagahama offered no safe anchorage and typhoons threatened to capsize ships, so in 1833 Shimazu Narioki, 27th lord of Satsuma, ordered a breakwater. Work began in the twelfth month of that year and was finished in the seventh month of the next.
