A Priest's House of About 1908

The Sedome Catholic Church Priest's House (瀬留カトリック教会司祭館, Sedome Katorikku Kyōkai Shisaikan) is a priest's house of about 1908 east of the church at Sedome, Tatsugo Town, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on April 18, 2008 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a two-storey timber building with a sheet-metal roof and a building area of 114 square metres, altered in 1987; registration number 46-0074, owned by the Catholic Diocese of Kagoshima.

Why It Was Registered

The priest's house was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, despite alterations, it tells part of the story of the Catholic mission on Amami Oshima together with the church.

What to Look For

It runs east to west, east of the church: a two-storey timber building 12 metres by 6.0 metres under a hipped sheet-metal roof, with a single-storey annexe projecting to the north and clapboard walls (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Standing beside the church, it preserves the layout of a Meiji-period mission.
