Sunshodo
Sunshodo (寸松堂) in Sasamemachi, Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a shop for Kamakura-bori lacquered carving whose main house and storehouse of 1936 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 18, 2006 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
According to Kamakura City, Sunshodo was founded in 1921 and is a shop and house with a workshop, where Kamakura-bori is made and sold.
The Two Buildings
The main house, on a corner plot at a crossroads, is a two-storey timber shop with a rooftop tower: its exposed tie beams and bracket sets recall a temple, its plastered walls and lattices a castle, and a Buddhist finial of rings crowns the tower (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The storehouse is a two-storey clay store joined to the north-east corner of the shop, with no stair of its own; each floor is entered from the matching floor of the main house (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A shop dressed as temple and castle and the store built into it stand together on the corner. Each building is described on its own page.
