What the Morisawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate Is
The Morisawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (森澤家住宅長屋門, Morisawa-ke jūtaku nagayamon) is a middle Meiji-period gatehouse in Doi, Aki City, Kochi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 10 November 2005. It stands at the southeast corner of the estate and faces south.
A Nagayamon is a gate built into a long, low range of rooms. This one measures 5 and a half by 3 bays under a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of pantiles, with a lean-to half a bay deep at the back, and a building area of 30 square metres. On either side of the passage are two rooms: eight tatami mats to the east, six to the west.
The front has a hinged door flanked by slatted Musha-mado windows. The walls are clad in battened clapboard up to waist height and finished above in Tosa lime plaster.
Why It Was Registered
Like the rest of the estate, the Morisawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that its boarded and plastered walls, together with the door and flanking windows, give the property the look of a residence of standing.
In the Edo period the nagayamon was the typical gate of samurai residences, and leading village families also raised them at the entrance to their compounds. The form itself, a gate that houses rooms, announced the standing of the household to anyone passing by.
The Morisawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate also works in tandem with the main house. Step through it and the south front of the main house, with its formal shikidai entrance, lies straight ahead across the yard. Status declared at the gate, guests received at the step: the sequence starts here.
What to Look For
Look first at the musha-mado. These windows are closely set with thick vertical bars, so that those inside can see out while almost nothing can be seen from the road. One sits on each side of the door, giving the front an almost symmetrical face.
Then read the walls. The lower band, which takes the splash of the rain, is protected by clapboard; above it the walls are finished in white Tosa lime plaster, a thick render mixed with fermented straw that has long been used to stand up to Kochi's wind and rain. The line where brown boarding meets white plaster strengthens the gatehouse's long horizontal.
The eight-mat and six-mat rooms would conventionally have housed a gatekeeper or servants, or served as storage. The registry does not say how these two were used, but the fact that they are finished as rooms, lean-to included, shows that this is more than a service entrance.
Visiting
The Morisawa Family Residence Nagayamon Gate belongs to a private residence and you cannot pass through it (checked 25 September 2026). Standing at the southeast corner and facing south, it is probably the component most easily seen from outside. If you can, view it from the south, with the door and both barred windows square in front of you.
Take photographs from the public road only and do not aim a lens through the doorway. Directions to the estate are on the Morisawa Family Residence page.
