About Niida Shrine (Tosayama Kuwao, Kochi)
Niida Shrine (仁井田神社, Niida Jinja) is a village shrine in the hills of Tosayama Kuwao, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, whose main hall and worship hall of 1889 and protective sayaden of 1919 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2004.
The name is read Niida. Several shrines in Kochi Prefecture carry the same name, and more than one stands within Kochi City itself, so this site adds the place name Kuwao to keep this one distinct.
The national register lists all three buildings as owned by Kuwao-ku, the local community of Kuwao rather than a religious corporation. That ownership says a good deal about the place: Niida Shrine has been kept up by the people of the hamlet around it.
The Three Buildings and How They Line Up
The buildings of Niida Shrine run in a single line away from the approach. First comes the worship hall, entered on its gable end. Behind it stands the sayaden, a shelter hall, and the main hall sits inside the sayaden. A visitor standing in the precinct therefore sees two buildings, not three.
Thirty years separate them. The main hall and the worship hall both date to 1889, in the Meiji era, while the sayaden was built in 1919, in the Taisho era. Its roof was originally thatched and is now sheathed in copper.
All three were registered on 9 June 2004 under consecutive numbers, 39-0152 through 39-0154, yet the reasons differ. The main hall qualified as a model of design, a nod to its carving and bracketwork. The worship hall and the sayaden qualified for their contribution to the historic landscape, as the buildings that give the shrine its face.
On the same day, the main hall and worship hall of Harumiya Shrine, also in Kuwao, were registered too, so one small mountain district gained listings for two village shrines at once.
Visiting Niida Shrine
Niida Shrine lies in the Tosayama district in the north of Kochi City, the area of the former Tosayama Village. Measured from its coordinates, it is about 8 km north-northwest of JR Kochi Station in a straight line, and the road climbs into the hills to reach it. Driving is the practical option; anyone relying on public transport should plan the route in advance.
No posted visiting hours or admission fee could be found. This is a community-owned shrine, so keep voices low and stay out of the way of any rites or maintenance work. Nor is there any official notice about entering the worship hall or sayaden, or about photography, so view the buildings from outside and do not go in.
