A Toilet Building with a Fan-Shaped Window
The Sawamura Family Residence Toilet (澤村家住宅便所) is a small outdoor toilet building of 1935 in Takaokacho Ko, Tosa City, Kochi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 8, 2004 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 4.3 square metres; registration number 39-0168.
A Narrow Building along the West Wall
The toilet stands in the northwest corner of the plot, running north to south along the western boundary wall (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a long, narrow single-storey timber building, 3.32 metres by 1.3 metres in plan, under a gabled roof of pantiles.
Four openings line the east side, and the northernmost one is the hatch for emptying the pit (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Agency notes its vertical boarding below, Tosa lime plaster above and a fan-shaped window in the west wall, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
What to Look For
Look for the fan-shaped window cut into the plastered west wall (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Even this small working building was given the same Tosa plaster finish as the storehouse, and a playful window to go with it.
Visiting
No official information on access was found. The fan-shaped window faces the western boundary wall, but whether it can be seen from outside the wall has not been confirmed.
