A Modernist Shell Museum on the Tatsukushi Coast
The Seashell Gallery (海のギャラリー, Umi no Gallery) is a reinforced-concrete shell museum on the Tatsukushi coast of Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture, designed by the architect Hayashi Masako (1928 to 2001) and completed in 1966, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 29, 2019. Its formal name is the Tosashimizu City Tatsukushi Shell Exhibition Hall, and it opened in February 1967 (Seashell Gallery).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as two storeys with a building area of 380 square metres, renovated in 2005; registration number 39-304, owned by Tosashimizu City.
The Kurohara Collection and Hayashi Masako
According to the gallery, the heart of the display is the tens of thousands of shells gathered by the Tosashimizu painter Kurohara Kazuo (1928 to 2018) with help from local fishermen. As Tatsukushi pushed for tourism and for the Ashizuri-Uwakai area to become a national park, and on the recommendation of the malacologist Habe Tadashige, a hall to show the collection was built here. At opening it displayed some 50,000 shells of about 3,000 species.
Hayashi Masako, a pioneering woman architect known mainly for houses, put her passion into this building in her mid-thirties; it became both an unusual work and her signature piece. She imagined how shells look in the dim sea lit faintly from above, and began the design from section sketches (Seashell Gallery).
Visitors declined from the 1980s and the building suffered leaks and decay. After Hayashi's death, her husband, the architect Hayashi Shoji, with other architects and local supporters, formed a group to save it; it was selected by DOCOMOMO Japan as a modern movement building in 2003 and reopened after repairs (Seashell Gallery).
Why It Was Registered
The Seashell Gallery was registered as a building that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that its folded-plate concrete structure expresses a bivalve opening to the sky in modernist form, with no dead space, a typical Hayashi work in which structure is design.
What to Look For
Inside the Seashell Gallery, daylight from the skylit ridge creates a dreamlike, underwater feeling (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The top light running east to west and the dynamic folded-plate roof weave geometric patterns of natural light (Seashell Gallery).
Rare shells such as the Japanese cowry sit in domed cases on the ground floor, and looking up through the void you see scallops lit from above. Note also the cantilevered stair, granite laid like ripples in sand and lighting by the sculptor Tada Minami (Seashell Gallery).
Visiting the Seashell Gallery
According to Tosashimizu City, the Seashell Gallery is open from 9:00 to 16:00 (17:00 in July and August) and closed on Thursdays, except in Golden Week, Obon and at New Year. Admission is 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for school pupils.
The address is 23-8 Tatsukushi, Tosashimizu City, about 15 minutes by car from the city hall, or take a Kochi Seinan Kotsu bus to Tatsukushi. A city car park for 70 cars adjoins it (Tosashimizu City), and the garden to the south is open to visitors (Seashell Gallery).
