The Shimanouchi Yukiko Family Residence (島内章子家住宅) is a homestead in Kamioka, Noichi-cho, Konan City, Kochi Prefecture, whose seven historic structures, a late-Edo storehouse, barn and side annex together with a main house, gate, stone wall and bathhouse built in 1935, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 June 2002.

The name trips people up. The official reading given in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database is Shimanouchi, not Shimauchi, and the given name 章子 is read Yukiko rather than the more familiar Akiko.

The estate occupies a long plot running north to south, close to the centre of one of Kamioka's old named land divisions, with a road along its southern edge. That southern side is the formal front. Less than 100 metres to the east stands the Shimanouchi Katsuyuki Family Residence, a second homestead of seven registered structures listed on the same day.

All seven entries for the Shimanouchi Yukiko Family Residence belong to the 33rd round of registrations and carry consecutive numbers, 39-0041 to 39-0047. The official notice of registration is dated 16 July 2002.

Late-Edo Outbuildings, a 1935 Front

The seven structures fall neatly into two periods. The storehouse, barn and side annex are dated to the end of the Edo period (1830 to 1867) and cluster in the middle and northern part of the plot, toward a passage along its west side. The main house, gate, stone wall and bathhouse date from 1935.

The 1935 group is the house itself and everything that faces the road. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the gate works together with the main house's entrance and the hip-and-gable roof of its living wing to form the estate's southern elevation, while the stone wall runs beneath them and turns north along the west passage. The pattern suggests a family that kept its older working buildings at the back and, in the mid-1930s, rebuilt the house and its public face.

That rebuild brought in new materials. The bathhouse is a single-storey reinforced concrete structure, counted among the early examples of reinforced concrete in domestic buildings in Kochi, and a low concrete wall runs along the top of the stone wall. The two share decorative details, and at the east end of the wall there is an unusual design built around a spiral motif.

How the Estate Is Laid Out

You approach the Shimanouchi Yukiko Family Residence from the road on the south. The gate stands at the southeast corner of the plot, reached by a flight of steps that turns at a right angle on the way up. The stone wall, 25 metres long in all, follows the southern edge and bends north at the corner to line the west passage.

Beyond the gate is the main house, three wings joined with their ridges set at right angles to one another. North of it, near the centre of the plot, the side annex runs east to west, its west end touching the storehouse. The bathhouse is attached to the annex on the east, so a late-Edo timber building and a 1930s concrete one stand wall to wall.

The storehouse sits north of the main house's kitchen wing, its ridge running north to south along the west passage, and the barn continues the line to the north. East of these buildings, at the back of the property, lies a field; the ground floor of the side annex doubles as the walkway out to it.

Two different criteria were applied. The main house, side annex, storehouse, barn and bathhouse were registered as models of form and design; the gate and stone wall were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape.

Visiting and Access

The Shimanouchi Yukiko Family Residence is a private home and none of its interiors are open. Neither the Kochi Prefecture nor the Konan City cultural property lists give any visiting days or arrangements (checked 27 September 2026). Please do not climb the gate steps or enter the grounds.

What you can see from outside is mainly the south front: the stone wall along the road, the gate above it and the roofs of the main house behind. The storehouse and barn face the west passage, but whether that passage is a public way has not been confirmed. No notice about photography was found either; this is a family's home, so keep any photos brief and discreet.

The nearest station is Noichi on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway's Gomen-Nahari Line. The estate lies west-southwest of the station, about 1.3 kilometres in a straight line, so allow around 20 minutes on foot. Through trains from Kochi Station reach Noichi in about 30 minutes. Kochi Ryoma Airport is roughly 1.7 kilometres to the southwest. No visitor parking is advertised.
