A Steel Shelter at a Country Halt
The Kumagawa Railway Kawamura Station Waiting Shelter (くま川鉄道川村駅待合所) is a steel-framed platform shelter in Yanase, Sagara Village, Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture, built in 1953 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 19 December 2014. It stands about 2 kilometres east of the Iwashimizu Arch Bridge, at an unstaffed halt surrounded by rice fields.
Kawamura opened as a stop on the national railways' Yunomae Line in 1953, and the shelter dates from that year. It covers 14 square metres with a frontage of 5.0 metres, open towards the platform and closed on the sides and back with vertical boarding.
A Frame That Grows Out of the Bench
The structure of the Kumagawa Railway Kawamura Station Waiting Shelter is disarmingly simple. Curved steel angles rise from a bench-shaped base and carry a single-pitch roof of sheet steel. Seat, post and roof are one continuous line, with as few members as possible.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises how easily this plain construction settles into the farmland around it, and the shelter was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. Kinoe Station in Nishiki Town has a shelter of the same period, also 5.0 metres wide and clad in vertical boards; side by side they look like siblings from one design idea.
Flood, Relocation and a Memorial
In the torrential rain of July 2020, Kawamura suffered worse than any other station on the line: the platform and the ballast under the rails were washed away. When the line was rebuilt, the company moved the stop out of harm's way. With the full reopening on 20 September 2026, a new station about 1 kilometre towards Hitoyoshi opened as Sagara-Toshima.
The old station was due to be cleared, but residents asked for it to be kept. In March 2026 Sagara Village set it out as disaster remains, with a sign recalling the high-school students who once waited here every morning. The Kumagawa Railway Kawamura Station Waiting Shelter no longer serves passengers, yet the registered name remains, and the little shelter now carries the memory of the flood.
Visiting
Trains no longer stop at the old Kawamura Station. The new Sagara-Toshima Station is about 1 kilometre towards Hitoyoshi; the adult fare from Hitoyoshi Onsen is 220 yen. The old station is a memorial maintained by Sagara Village, and it is best to check with the village which areas are open to visitors.
The working line still runs right past the Kumagawa Railway Kawamura Station Waiting Shelter. Stay off the track, watch for trains, and keep out of the surrounding fields.
