About the Daishoji Zangetsutei Tea House
The Daishoji Zangetsutei Tea House (大聖寺残月亭) is the single-storey timber tea house of 1938 at Daishoji, an imperial Zen convent in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 75 square metres, with a connecting corridor; registration number 26-0353, owned by the religious corporation Daishoji. Nine of the convent's buildings and walls were registered on the same day (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Daishoji Zangetsutei Tea House was registered as a building that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs regards it as a fine modern tea house, carefully built of good materials.
What to Look For
The Daishoji Zangetsutei is linked to the west of the Miyagoten by a corridor: an L-shaped hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) building showing gables to the east and south (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
At its centre is a four-and-three-quarter-mat tea room with alcove and shelves; to the south is a six-mat room with an alcove and writing desk, and to the east a memorial-tablet room and preparation room (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Visiting the Daishoji Zangetsutei Tea House
According to the Japan Tourism Agency commentary, Daishoji remains an active convent and is closed to the public except for occasional special exhibitions. The front gate and earthen walls can be seen from Karasuma-dori and the lane to the south. The address is 109-1 Goshohachiman-cho, Karasuma-dori Kamidachiuri-sagaru, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto.
