Former Koyama Family Residence Storehouse: A Plastered Storehouse of 1893
The Former Koyama Family Residence Storehouse (Tamuraya Hotaruan; 旧小山家住宅（田村屋螢庵）土蔵) is a single-storey earthen storehouse built in 1893 in Mino, Miyama-cho, Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, and was entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs lists a single-storey dozo-style storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 23 square metres. It was registered on 18 April 2008 under number 26-0301, as a building that contributes to the historic landscape.
Why It Was Registered
The storehouse stands northwest of the main house, the two side by side on a raised terrace. The agency says the pairing gives the estate an imposing presence.
The Former Koyama Family Residence Storehouse was registered less for its own ornament than as part of the estate's scene, a white-walled storehouse beside a thatched farmhouse.
What to Look For
The roof is gabled on an east-west ridge and laid with interlocking tiles as an okiyane, a separate roof set slightly above the plastered body of the storehouse to help with fire protection and ventilation. A pent roof on the west side shelters the entrance.
The storehouse measures 6.7 metres by 4.5 metres. Its walls are finished in shikkui lime plaster with vertical boards along the base. The white plaster against the darkened boards sharpens the view of the estate when seen beside the thatch of the main house.
