Jinkoin Temple

Jinkoin Temple (神光院) in Nishigamo Jinkoincho, Kita Ward, Kyoto, has a main hall of 1829, a guest hall of 1826, the Chukodo of 1917, the late Edo Rengetsuan and a late Edo gate that were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 26, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is owned by Jinkoin Temple.

According to Kyoto City, it is said to have been founded in 1217 after an oracle received by a priest of Kamigamo Shrine, and is counted with To-ji and Ninna-ji as one of the three Kobo temples of Kyoto, known locally as the Kobo-san of Nishigamo.

The Five Buildings

A one-bay yakuimon gate opens in the middle of the south side, with the Rengetsuan, the small hermitage where Otagaki Rengetsu lived, beside it. The main hall in the middle of the precinct has half-shutters across its whole front; the guest hall to the east, linked by a corridor, is a reception hall of nine rooms; and the Chukodo to the north-west is a modern hall layering a gabled roof and a cusped porch on a pyramid-roofed core (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each is described on its own page.
