About the Ogawa Bunsai Family Residence Storehouse

The Ogawa Bunsai Family Residence Storehouse (小川文齋家住宅土蔵) is a two-storey earthen storehouse of the late Edo period (1830 to 1868) at the Ogawa Bunsai house on Gojozaka in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 2, 2018. It adjoins the north-west corner of the main house, facing east (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a two-storey earthen-walled building with a tiled roof and a building area of 13 square metres; registration number 26-0577, with no owner listed. The Ogawa Bunsai family are potters who set up independently on Gojozaka in 1873, and their main house, storehouse and climbing kiln were all registered on November 2, 2018 (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Bunsai Kiln).

Why It Was Registered

The Ogawa Bunsai Family Residence Storehouse was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, though small at two bays square, it is carefully finished and adds charm to the back garden of the town house.

What to Look For

The Ogawa Bunsai Family Residence Storehouse runs north-south under a separately framed gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) roof. Its plastered walls have a washed-finish base and a single drip course around the middle (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

There is no moulded band under the eaves, and a small window with a hood opens in the south gable upstairs (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
