The Wall Around the Daiosaki Lighthouse

The Daiosaki Lighthouse Gateposts and Wall (大王埼灯台門柱及び塀) are the reinforced-concrete gateposts and wall built in 1927 around the Daiosaki Lighthouse at Joyama, Nakiri, Daio-cho, Shima City, Mie Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 29, 2013 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records both as reinforced concrete, with the wall 105 metres long (105.3 metres in its commentary), registration number 24-0148, owned by the national government (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) and Shima City.

Why They Were Registered

The Daiosaki Lighthouse Gateposts and Wall were registered as structures contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs says they contribute, together with the lighthouse, to the historic seascape of the Kumano Sea. The lighthouse itself was registered the same day.

What to Look For

The wall follows the ground, pushing out toward the sea and bending as it circles the lighthouse, and its top is rounded (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its line along the cliff edge traces the shape of the cape itself.

The gateposts are reinforced concrete faced in washed mortar, a finish that exposes fine gravel on the surface (Agency for Cultural Affairs); up close the texture is almost tactile.

Visiting

The Daiosaki Lighthouse Gateposts and Wall enclose the lighthouse grounds and can be seen when you visit the lighthouse, which the Tokokai opens to the public for a donation of 300 yen (junior-high age and above).

The history of the cape, directions and opening hours are on the group page Daiosaki Lighthouse.
