A Small Storehouse at a Poet's Birthplace

The Storehouse of Sasaki Nobutsuna's Birthplace (佐佐木信綱生家土蔵) is a two-storey clay-walled storehouse of 1875 at the birthplace of Sasaki Nobutsuna in Ishiyakushi-cho, Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 28, 2011. It was moved in 1932 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records two storeys of clay-walled construction with a tiled roof and a building area of 14 square metres; registration number 24-0110, owned by Suzuka City.

The Birthplace and the Memorial Museum

According to Suzuka City, the poet and scholar Sasaki Nobutsuna was born at Ishiyakushi in 1872, the eldest son of the National Learning scholar Sasaki Hirotsuna. He published a critical edition of the Man'yoshu and received the first Order of Culture in 1937.

The Sasaki Nobutsuna Memorial Museum opened at the birthplace in 1970 and now comprises an exhibition building of 1986, the Ishiyakushi Bunko library and the Storehouse of Sasaki Nobutsuna's Birthplace (Suzuka City).

Value as a Registered Cultural Property

The Storehouse of Sasaki Nobutsuna's Birthplace was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, with the main house, it keeps the atmosphere of a post-town merchant house.

What to Look For

The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it stands toward the west of the north side of the main house, 4.6 metres by 3.1 metres, with a gabled tiled roof and a pent roof over the door on the south side. The walls are white plaster above wooden wainscoting, and inside, posts set every half bay are tied with tie beams and lined with boards.

Small as it is, the Storehouse of Sasaki Nobutsuna's Birthplace completes, with the main house, the layout of a townhouse in the former Ishiyakushi post town (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Visiting

According to Suzuka City, admission to the Sasaki Nobutsuna Memorial Museum is free, with viewing from 10:00 to 16:00. It is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and the third Wednesday (open when only the Monday is a holiday) and over the New Year. Take the C-Bus from Kintetsu Suzukashi Station or JR Kawano Station to the Sasaki Kinenkan stop, about a 2-minute walk (Suzuka City).

The Storehouse of Sasaki Nobutsuna's Birthplace forms the Sasaki Nobutsuna Memorial Museum with the main house and the Ishiyakushi Bunko Reading Room. See the group page Sasaki Nobutsuna Memorial Museum for all three buildings.
