What Is the Former Kannoya Kanbei?

The Former Kannoya Kanbei (旧菅野屋勘兵衛, Kyū Kannoya Kanbē) is a group of merchant buildings in central Toyoma-machi, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, built between about 1889 and about 1899 for a family of shipping merchants, and its main house, document storehouse and grain storehouse were entered together on the national register as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 4, 2021.

The official listing adds a second name in brackets: Kaisen Don'ya Kankan Shiryōkan, or the Kankan Shipping Merchant Museum. A kaisen don'ya was a broker who arranged cargo for boats, handling goods on commission rather than simply selling them over a counter.

The three buildings span a single decade. The main house came first, around 1889. The document storehouse followed in 1890, and the grain storehouse around 1899. They carry consecutive registration numbers, 04-0182 to 04-0184, and all three were registered for the same reason: each contributes to the historic landscape of the country.

Getting the Name Right: Kannoya, Not Suganoya

Visitors reading the kanji will be tempted to say "Suganoya." The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives the reading as Kannoya Kanbē, with the character 菅 in its Sino-Japanese reading kan. The museum's nickname, Kankan (菅勘), takes the first character of each half of the merchant name, Kannoya and Kanbei.

The place name needs the same care. Tome City is read Tome, but the old castle town where the Former Kannoya Kanbei stands is Toyoma, written with the same two characters.

How the Former Kannoya Kanbei Site Is Laid Out

A shop faces south onto the street, and the main house is attached to its rear. North of the main house, the document storehouse stands facing south, and the grain storehouse sits just to its east, also facing south. Read from the street inward, the lot runs shop, house, then a pair of storehouses at the back.

Only the house and the two storehouses are registered; the street-front shop is not. That places every registered building of the Former Kannoya Kanbei in the depth of the lot rather than on the frontage.

The two storehouses are close relatives. Both are two-storey Dozo-zukuri buildings entered from the gable end (Tsumairi), with Shikkui plaster walls and bands of Namako-kabe tile cladding. The Agency's description calls the grain storehouse "somewhat plainer" than its neighbour, yet its footprint is larger: 41 m² against 29 m² for the document storehouse.

A Shipping House on the Kitakami River

Toyoma grew up on the west bank of the Kitakami River as the seat of the Toyoma Date family, a branch of the Sendai domain's ruling house. Early in the Edo period the river itself was rerouted, and a network of river ports was built to move rice downstream to Ishinomaki and on to Edo.

Steamers appeared on the Kitakami in the Meiji era, but after the railway opened in 1890 river freight slowly declined. The Former Kannoya Kanbei buildings date from exactly that turning point, and the fact that the family was still adding a storehouse around 1899 suggests the business outlasted the first years of the railway.

Toyoma keeps enough Meiji-era Western-style buildings and plastered merchant houses to be nicknamed the "Meiji Village of Miyagi," and several other merchant buildings in town are also on the national register.

Getting to the Former Kannoya Kanbei and What You Can See

The simplest public-transport route is the Higashi Nippon Kyuko highway bus on its Sendai to Toyoma line, boarding in front of Sendai Station (stop 32, in front of the former Sakuraya building) and getting off at Toyoma Meiji-mura. The 10:05 a.m. departure arrives at 11:35 a.m., a ride of about 1 hour 30 minutes. Outbound buses leave Sendai at 10:05 a.m., 5:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m.; fares are cash only and no reservation is needed (timetable checked September 2026).

From the Toyoma Meiji-mura stop, the Former Kannoya Kanbei lies roughly 350 meters to the south-southwest, about a five-minute walk. The Toyoma tourist center, Tōyama no Sato, stands right at the stop and hands out walking maps. By car, the town center is about four minutes from the Tome Interchange on the Sanriku Expressway.

The buildings are privately owned by Ai Home Co., Ltd. As of September 2026 we could find no official notice of opening days, hours or admission for the Kankan Shipping Merchant Museum. If you hope to see the interiors, ask first at the tourist information desk in Tōyama no Sato (Toyoma Shinko Kosha, tel. 0220-52-5566). Please do not enter the property without permission, and take photographs from the public road.
