A Hall for the Portable Shrine

Tsushima Shrine stands in Sanuma, Tome, Miyagi, once the site of a fortified post of the Sendai domain; its main hall of 1919, worship hall of 1923 and mikoshi hall of 1935 are registered (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The mikoshi hall, of 1935, stands north-west of the worship hall, a single-storey hip-and-gable hall 3 bays by 2 bays entered from the gable end, with a copper roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It has projecting three-bearing brackets and single close-set rafters, with double lattice doors on the east.

Inside is a single earth-floored room with a coffered ceiling, the mikoshi set at its centre. The Agency notes its simple but careful workmanship and its part in the historic precinct.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
