About United Church of Christ in Japan Ichinoseki Church

United Church of Christ in Japan Ichinoseki Church (日本基督教団一関教会, Nihon Kirisuto Kyōdan Ichinoseki Kyōkai) is a single-storey timber church in Tamura-cho, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, completed in 1929 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2007. It faces the street, with a spire rising at the right of the sanctuary front.

According to the church, its story begins in August 1894, when the Rev. Miura Tōru and the evangelist Satō Senzō came from the Morioka preaching station of the Church of Christ in Japan to hold meetings in Ichinoseki. A preaching station opened in the Hirogai district in 1897, and on October 1, 1905, the Ichinoseki station of the Miyagi Presbytery was formally established; the church counts this as its founding date.

The congregation moved to the present site in 1908, and on June 15, 1929, the current church was completed with support from missionaries of the Presbyterian Church in North America. The church also runs Mutsumi Nursery School.

Why Ichinoseki Church Is Registered

United Church of Christ in Japan Ichinoseki Church was registered on July 31, 2007, as number 03-0064, for its contribution to the historic landscape.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as timber, single-storey, with a sheet-metal roof and a building area of 171 square meters. It highlights a roof framed with hammer beams and tie bars. Hammer beams are short horizontal timbers projecting from the walls that carry the roof load, an English Gothic device for spanning a wide room without rows of posts; the iron tie bars stop the walls from spreading.

The walls are clapboard of the Shitami-itabari type, with paired pointed-arch windows. The front windows and the area above the entrance are decorated with trefoil arches. An early Shōwa timber church raising a spire over a provincial street, it has long served as a landmark in town.

What to Look For

From the street, the spire rises to the right of the gabled sanctuary. Setting the tower to one side instead of on the center line is what gives the building its outline.

Look closely at the windows. Along the sides they come in pairs of pointed arches, while the front windows and the entrance use the three-lobed trefoil arch. The builders varied the arch shape by position.

If you get a chance to go inside, look up to see how the hammer beams and tie bars work together.
