A shed for firewood and building materials
The Yusa Family Residence Materials Shed (遊佐家住宅材料小屋, Yusa-ke Jūtaku Zairyōgoya) is a small shed from around 1945 on the Yusa farmstead in the Baba district of Naruko Onsen, Ōsaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, entered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 11 December 1998.
It stands in line just south of the miso room and, as its name says, was used to keep building materials, firewood and the like. The shed is a single-storey timber building with a building area of 14 square metres, under a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of sheet iron.
It is the youngest of the six registered buildings, put up around the end of the Second World War.
Why it was registered
The Yusa Family Residence Materials Shed was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a plain building that shows one side of everyday life on the farm.
Firewood fed the kitchen and the stove, and building materials went into repairs around the farmstead. This shed held both.
An open bay and plank walls
One bay at the south end is left open, with no wall, and the rest is enclosed in plank walls. Long timbers and bundles of firewood are easy to move in and out, and the open bay keeps rain off while letting air through to dry them.
Like the miso room next to it, the roof is carried on a simple frame. Standing side by side, the two sheds form a small, consistent group of outbuildings on the west side of the farmstead.
Visiting
The Yusa Family Residence Materials Shed is on private property and no public opening has been announced. Photographs of the building are published in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database and on the Cultural Heritage Online portal.
