The Hanaya Hotel Inner Building is a two-storey timber wing of about 1920 at the ryokan Hanaya in Bessho Onsen, Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, entered on the national roll of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 18, 2006. It stands west of the No. 27 wing and covers 184 square metres.
A gabled roof of pantiles sits on a plan close to square. Inside are two guest rooms set side by side, each entered through a 6-mat anteroom that opens into an 8-mat zashiki, with a hirōen veranda along the outer edge.
Hanaya began trading as an inn in 1917, so the Hanaya Hotel Inner Building (花屋ホテル奥棟) went up about three years later, while the property was still taking shape.
Listed as a Model of Design
The criterion here is that the building serves as a model of design. The official description points to modern inventiveness in the detailing and names one member in particular: the otoshigake, the horizontal timber that spans the head of the tokonoma alcove. In a Japanese room, that member sits where the eye settles.
The wood chosen for it is cherry, and it is finished menkawa: rather than squaring the log fully, the carpenter leaves the rounded outer surface on the corners. What survives on that edge is the texture of the timber just under the bark. Cherry is an unusual choice in itself, and together the two decisions step outside the standard sukiya vocabulary.

Stand in front of the alcove and look up. The rounded edge left on the otoshigake breaks the run of otherwise perfectly squared timbers, a difference of a few millimetres that shifts under changing light. Run a hand along it and the choice becomes obvious.
The veranda deserves a moment too. Wrapping the outer face of the zashiki, it puts a band of intermediate space between room and garden. Slide the paper screens back and the boundary stops being a line.
The pairing of two rooms shapes the sequence of arrival. Nobody steps straight from a corridor into the formal room; the anteroom comes first. That measured order, along with the low horizontal sweep of the gabled roof, is what characterises the Hanaya Hotel Inner Building.

Day-use lunch and dinner bookings admit you to the property but not to the guest rooms, and the hot spring baths are closed to day visitors on their own. Callers without any booking reach the entrance lobby only, and only with prior notice from a staying guest.
Bessho Onsen Station on the Ueda Electric Railway Bessho Line lies about 5 minutes on foot, roughly 30 minutes from Ueda Station by train. By car, allow around 35 minutes from the Ueda-Sugadaira interchange; parking is free and no shuttle runs. Check-in is 3 p.m. with arrival by 6 p.m., and check-out is 11 a.m. The buildings are timber throughout, with no lift and frequent steps. The inn publishes no photography rule.
