Two long blocks face each other; two short blocks drop in between them. No mortar, no ornament, no inscription.
The height of 70 centimetres is the other quiet decision. Bend slightly at the waist and you can look down the shaft, which is about right for lifting a bucket. Because the Hanaya Hotel Well sits beside the path to the entrance, arriving guests pass within a metre of it without necessarily noticing.

People who are not staying may enter only when a registered guest has notified the inn in advance, and even then only as far as the entrance lobby; visits after 6 p.m. are not accepted. Reaching the garden where the well stands means either booking a room or reserving a day-use lunch or dinner.
Guests who want to walk the buildings in order can book a stay that includes a guided tour of the property. Day-use of the baths alone is not offered. Check-in is at 3 p.m., with arrival requested by 6 p.m., and check-out is at 11 a.m. The reservations line answers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bessho Onsen Station on the Ueda Electric Railway Bessho Line is a five-minute walk away, and the ride from Ueda Station takes roughly 30 minutes. Drivers reach the inn in about 35 minutes from the Ueda-Sugadaira interchange of the Joshin-etsu Expressway, and parking on site is free. There is no shuttle service.
