The Great Hall of 1936
The Kanaguya Ryokan Great Hall (金具屋旅館大広間) is a two-storey timber banquet hall of 1936 in Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on July 1, 2003 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). In Japanese the hall is called the Ōhiroma.
The Agency records a two-storey timber building roofed in sheet iron, with a building area of 322 square metres: a 170-mat hall built at the same time as the Saigetsuro, its roof badly damaged by heavy snow and repaired in 1950; registration number 20-0137.
A Banquet Hall for the Railway Age
Kanaguya's history pages say the Kanaguya Ryokan Great Hall was first called the Onsen Kaikan. Once the Nagano Electric Railway reached Yudanaka, parties of 200 to 300 pilgrims arrived by train and needed a place to gather, and the hall served the whole town as well as the inn's own guests. Its master carpenter was the same Obuse temple builder who worked on the Saigetsuro.
The inn writes that heavy snow in February 1945 brought down the matted hall and that it was rebuilt in its present form in 1950. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records serious damage to the roof followed by repair, so the two accounts differ on how much was lost.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the Kanaguya Ryokan Great Hall is plainer outside than the Saigetsuro, but singles out features such as the coved and coffered ceiling inside, calling it a good example of the great hall of a traditional timber inn. It was registered as a model of design.
What to Look For
Kanaguya describes the matted floor of the Kanaguya Ryokan Great Hall as 130 tatami with no columns, rising to about 200 mats once the stage, the alcove and the surrounding corridor are counted. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives 170 mats; the figures seem to cover different areas, so both are given here.
Look up at the coved and coffered ceiling. The inn says no single boards wide enough for the coffers could be found, so each panel was laid with 3 boards and given a grid-shaped trim inside, which is why it is sometimes called a double coffered ceiling, although strictly it is not one. The roof of the Kanaguya Ryokan Great Hall rests on triangulated trusses rather than beams, the stage survives from 1936, and the large painting over the room was done on the spot by a local artist between 1955 and 1964.
Visiting
Today the Kanaguya Ryokan Great Hall serves as the dining room for overnight guests (Kanaguya), so only guests see it. The free guest tour starts daily at 5:30 p.m. and lasts about 40 minutes; the inn does not admit visitors who are not staying.
