Myotokuji Temple

Myotokuji Temple (明徳寺) in Matsushiromachi Toyosaka, Nagano City, a Soto Zen temple in the hills south-east of Matsushiro, has a main hall and a gate of about 1713 registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 17, 2022 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Both are owned by the temple.

The Agency describes the main hall as going back to the mid-Edo period with the typical Soto Zen plan, and the gate in front of it as a two-storey gate that also serves as the bell tower.

The Two Buildings

The main hall, nine bays by seven, has a hipped thatched roof under temporary sheet iron with a tall box ridge, and a six-room plan with added formal rooms (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The gate is a three-bay two-storey gate with cusped windows on its upper floor, once thatched (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The bell-tower gate at the top of the steps and the thatched hall behind it keep the layout of a hill temple. Each building is described on its own page.
