The Building That Greets You at the Gate

The Nagano Meijo West Barn (長野銘醸西納屋, Nagano Meijō Nishi-naya) is a late Edo-period single-storey storehouse at the centre of the Nagano Meijo sake brewery in Yahata, Chikuma City, Nagano Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 19, 2014.

It was built between 1830 and 1868 and altered in 1897. The name says barn, but the construction says otherwise: this is a Dozo-zukuri building, walls of packed clay under a tiled roof, covering 31 square metres. Its registration number is 20-0473. On its south side it joins directly onto the lees storehouse, where the brewery keeps sake kasu.

Twelve buildings at the brewery, this one included, were registered together in 2014.

A Shopfront Hidden in Plain Sight

The official description begins with where the Nagano Meijo West Barn stands. Walk in through the Nagayamon, the gatehouse on the northern road, and this is the building directly in front of you. It is said to have served as the brewery's shop.

Picture a customer arriving on foot along the Zenkoji Road, stepping through the gate and doing business at the counter straight ahead. The layout makes sense. Today the brewery shop occupies the ground floor of the office building elsewhere in the compound, so the West Barn preserves an earlier arrangement of how Nagano Meijo met its buyers.

The registration criterion is contribution to the historic landscape, and the description stresses the view the barn makes together with the lees storehouse running south from it. Part of its value lies in the pairing.

What to Look For

A Wall Left at the Middle Coat

Japanese storehouse walls go on in layers: a rough base, an intermediate coat, and finally white Shikkui plaster. The Nagano Meijo West Barn stops at the intermediate coat, leaving a muted earthen finish, with sasarako Shitami-itabari clapboarding around the base. In a compound full of white-walled buildings, that difference in tone is easy to spot once you know to look.

A Raised Wooden Floor

Inside, the floor is boarded rather than left as beaten earth. That points to people standing and working in the space, which fits the tradition of its use as a shop.

Where Two Buildings Meet

From the gate, follow the roofline back to where the lees storehouse begins. The change in walls and eaves shows two structures joined into one working range. Whether the 1897 alterations created that link is not recorded in the published sources.

Visiting the Nagano Meijo West Barn

Standing in the middle of the compound, the Nagano Meijo West Barn can only be glimpsed from the road through the open gate. To see it properly you need to be inside the grounds. The interior is not listed as open.
