Nakamura Family Residence (Azumino) (中村家住宅, Nakamura-ke Jūtaku) is a rural homestead in Misato Yutaka, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, whose five buildings, dating from the late Edo period to the Taishō era, were each registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 27, 2006.

At the center of the plot stands the main house, set a little west of the middle and facing east. It is a honmune-zukuri house, the gable-fronted farmhouse type of the Chūshin region, the stretch of central Nagano that runs from the Matsumoto basin up through Azumino. What makes the Nakamura homestead worth attention is that the supporting cast survived too. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points out that the gate and fence dividing the forecourt from the inner yard, and the storehouse with a miso store built into it, are both forms that turn up again and again around Chūshin houses of this kind.

The five buildings span roughly a century. The oldest firmly dated one is the front storehouse of 1820. The main house is assigned to the late Edo period, sometime between 1751 and 1829. The rear storehouse was built at the end of the Edo period and moved to its present spot in 1887, the same year the barn went up, and the gate and fence linking the main house to the front storehouse were added in the Taishō era, between 1912 and 1925.

How the plot is arranged

The ground in front of the main house, on its east side, is the forecourt. The front storehouse stands along its south edge, and a gate with short runs of fence connects the main house to that storehouse, closing off the forecourt from the inner yard behind. Read as a plan, it separates the face the household showed to visitors from the working space the family used every day.

The back of the plot holds the working buildings: the rear storehouse in the northwest corner, whose northern half served as a miso store, and the barn near the northern boundary, used for silkworm rearing and for polishing rice. Food stores and farm work sit together on the north side of the homestead.

The rear storehouse was moved here in 1887, and the barn was built in 1887 as well. It is tempting to read that as a single campaign to reorganize the north side of the property, but the Agency's records do not say so, and the coincidence of dates is all there is to go on.

Registration

All five buildings of Nakamura Family Residence (Azumino) were listed in the 50th round of registrations, under the consecutive numbers 20-0255 to 20-0259. The Agency's database gives the registration date as March 27, 2006, with publication in the official gazette on April 12, 2006. Azumino City's own list of cultural properties uses the April date and records the group as the Nakamura Family Residence Main House and four other buildings in the Misato district.

The buildings were registered under different criteria. The main house and the rear storehouse qualified as models of their building type, while the front storehouse, the barn, and the gate and fence were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape. In other words, two buildings set the pattern and three hold the scene together.

Visiting

Nakamura Family Residence (Azumino) is a private home. Neither the owners nor Azumino City publish any visiting arrangements, and no public opening had been announced as of September 2026. The grounds are not open. Azumino City reminds visitors that some cultural properties are never routinely open and asks them to be considerate of owners and neighbors.
