What Is the Shimoimai Suwa Shrine Suwa-sha?
The Shimoimai Suwa Shrine Suwa-sha (下今井諏訪神社諏訪社, also written Suwasha) is the main sanctuary built in 1750 at the center rear of the Shimoimai Suwa Shrine precinct in Imai, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 31, 2022.
It enshrines Takeminakata and Kotoshironushi. Before the shrine merger of 1915, this ground already belonged to the local Suwa shrine, and the Suwa-sha was its honden, or main sanctuary. Of the three sanctuaries now standing in a row, the Hachiman-sha and the Yasaka-sha were brought in from other hamlets at the merger; the Suwa-sha is the one that was always here.
It is a small building, with a footprint of 7.0 square meters. The construction date comes from its style and its ridge tag (Munafuda), and the sanctuary was repaired in 1938. Matsumoto City attributes it, as a probable work, to Watanabe Tsunamasa, a carpenter from Suwa.
Why It Was Registered: A Mid-Eighteenth-Century Sanctuary Intact
The Suwa-sha was registered as a structure that would be difficult to reproduce. It follows the one-bay Nagare-zukuri plan: a single-bay inner core under a roof that extends forward in one long slope to cover the entrance porch (Kōhai).
The posts of the core are round and the porch posts square. The eaves use two tiers of closely spaced rafters. A veranda circles the building, and at the front are steps and a raised platform (Hama-en). Inside, the space divides into an inner sanctum (Naijin) and an outer room (Gejin). Today the roof is sheathed in copper, but it was originally laid with thin wooden shingles (Kokerabuki).
Matsumoto City describes the Shimoimai Suwa Shrine Suwa-sha as well preserved and close to its original form, and treats it as the central building of the precinct. The 1938 repair left the arrangement of core and porch, and the carved details, largely as they were built.
What to Look For: Rabbits on Waves and a Crested Bracket
The place to focus on the Suwa-sha is the area just above the porch's front tie beam. There an openwork (Sukashibori) transom (Ranma) shows rabbits among waves, and above it sits a frog-leg strut (Kaerumata) bearing the Suwa shrine crest. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out both pieces as refined design.
Look too at the curved tie beams (Ebi-kōryō) that link the porch posts to the core. Their curve is gentle, and the scroll patterns carved into the beams are restrained, in keeping with the quieter taste of the mid-eighteenth century.
A useful comparison stands right next door. The Hachiman-sha on the north side was built 40 years later, in 1790, and its curved beams bend sharply while its carved ornament grows busier. Seen side by side, the two share a plan, yet the composure of the Suwa-sha becomes much easier to appreciate.
Visiting the Shimoimai Suwa Shrine Suwa-sha
The Shimoimai Suwa Shrine Suwa-sha stands inside the sacred fence behind the worship hall, so it cannot be approached closely. After praying at the worship hall, walk around to its side and view the sanctuary across the fence. The interior is not open.
The rabbit transom and the crested bracket are on the porch front above the tie beam. The building is small and set back from the fence, so binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens help with the details. Because the Suwa-sha sits in the middle of the row, you can take in the Hachiman-sha and Yasaka-sha in the same view and compare all three.
