What the Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall Is
Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall (玉依比賣命神社拝殿, Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto Jinja Haiden) is the hall of worship of Tamayorihime Shrine in Tōjō, Matsushiro-machi, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, dated by the Agency for Cultural Affairs to 1854 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2014.
A haiden is where people stand to pray and where priests conduct rites; the deity itself is housed in the main hall behind. At 108 square meters, the Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall is by far the largest of the shrine's four registered buildings. It is a single-storey timber building with a copper-sheet roof, set directly in front of the east-facing main hall.
The date needs a caveat. The national database gives the seventh year of Kaei, 1854. The Shinshu Matsushiro Tourism Association states that the present shrine buildings were rebuilt in the fourth year of Tenpō, 1833. The sources consulted do not explain the difference, and this article follows the national record.
A Floor Plan That Climbs in Three Steps
What sets the Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall apart is its plan. The official description calls it varied, with a cleverly staged interior, and walking its length on paper makes the point.
At the front is a board-floored room under an Irimoya-zukuri roof turned end-on, so that its gable faces the approach. That is the Tsumairi arrangement. A Kōhai, a projecting porch roof, is attached to this front block.
Behind it, one level higher, stands the main body of the hall. This too has a hip-and-gable roof, but turned side-on in the Hirairi arrangement, with a wide frontage. The central part of this body is raised again to form the norito-dokoro, the place where the priest recites prayers.
Finally, at the very back and in the center, a two-tatami space projects outward on the highest floor of all, reaching toward the main hall.
So the floor rises three times on the way from the porch to the deity. Each step marks a more restricted space, and the plan turns the approach to the kami into a physical ascent.
Why the Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall Was Registered
The Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall was registered on December 19, 2014 as number 20-0462, under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
Part of that contribution is its roofline. Two hip-and-gable roofs meet at right angles, one gable-end forward and one broadside, with the porch roof in front and the rear projection behind. The official description singles out the complexity of the roof form. The tourism association describes the shrine buildings as modeled on yatsumune-zukuri, the many-gabled style, and the jostling of gables here shows what that description means.
Seeing the Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall
The Tamayorihime Shrine Worship Hall can be viewed from the grounds, and visitors pray in front of it. No regular opening of the interior is advertised, so the stepped floor levels are not something most visitors will see for themselves.
To understand the roof, do not stand dead center. Move to one front corner and step back until both the front gable and the ridge of the main body behind it are in view; the right-angle meeting of the two roofs then becomes clear. The main hall's ridge appears beyond them.
No photography rule is published; please refrain during rites and prayers. Access details are on the Tamayorihime Shrine page.
