A Corner on the Pilgrim Road
The Fujioka Family Residence Wall (藤岡家住宅塀, Fujioka-ke Jūtaku Hei) is a late Edo-period timber-framed wall in Konnaicho, Gojo City, Nara Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006. It stands at the northwest corner of the compound, turning the street corner in an L.
It is about 13.6 metres long by the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ description, while the structure field of the same database gives 14 metres. The wall rises from a base of irregular fieldstones and is built with its posts left visible (Shinkabe). The panels are lime-plastered above a skirting of vertical boards. Bracket arms carry the eave beam, and a board eave supports a pantile roof.
At the corner the west run is set one step higher than the other. It is a short wall, but the change in height keeps the corner from looking flat.
Dressing the Road to Mount Kongo
The Fujioka Family Residence Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with ordering the streetscape of the pilgrim road to Mount Kongo.
The road in front of the Fujioka house was one of the routes taken by people heading to the mountain. The earthen Tsuiji Wall encloses the east and south sides; this timber wall, white plaster above warm boarding, takes the northwest corner. The household evidently dressed its frontage all the way to the corner.
Beside the Tsuiji Wall, about 78 metres long, this is a modest piece, about 14 metres. It earned its own registration because it completes the look of the compound at a conspicuous street corner.
Fieldstones and a Single Step
The base is laid in random rubble (Ranzumi), stones of mixed size and shape fitted together, with a plainer, more rustic face than dressed and coursed masonry.
Stand at the corner and compare the two runs: the roof of the west run is plainly one step higher. Up close you can also follow how the bracket arms carry the eave beam and pick out the thin line of the board eave.
Visiting the Wall
The Fujioka Family Residence Wall faces the street, so it can be seen at any time without entering the house museum. From the northwest corner you see both the L-shaped turn and the step. The road carries traffic; keep to the side.
