What Is Honzenji Temple Main Hall?
Honzenji Temple Main Hall (本善寺本堂, Honzen-ji Hondō) is the principal worship hall of Honzenji, a Jōdo Shinshū temple in Iigai, Yoshino Town, Nara Prefecture; built in the mid-Edo period (1661 to 1750), it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 15, 2010.
It stands at the center of the precinct, straight ahead as you come through the main gate. The national database records later repairs in 1809 and 1900. With a building area of 448 square meters, it is by far the largest of the 11 buildings registered at the temple.
The hall enshrines Amida Buddha, the principal image of the temple, and it is also where members of the congregation gather for services and Dharma talks.
A Shin Buddhist Plan
Honzenji Temple Main Hall measures 18 meters across and 17 meters deep. A single great hip-and-gable roof (Irimoya-zukuri) covered in traditional pantiles (Hongawarabuki) shelters it, and a one-bay porch (Kōhai) projects at the front.
Shin Buddhism, the Pure Land school founded by Shinran, stresses listening to the teaching together, and its halls give most of their floor to the congregation. Here the front part is the outer hall (Gejin) where worshippers sit. Behind it lie the inner sanctuary (Naijin) with the altar and two side chambers called yoma, then a space called the saya-no-ma and finally a rear hall, the ushirodō. Broad verandas wrap the outer hall on three sides.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered Honzenji Temple Main Hall as a model of architectural form, under registration number 29-0149. Its description calls the hall a building with the dignity expected of the leading Shin temple in the Yoshino region.

After the burning of 1578, that estimate sits comfortably within the database's mid-Edo range.
Seeing Honzenji Temple Main Hall
Honzenji Temple Main Hall faces you as soon as you pass the main gate. Step back toward the middle of the grounds to take in the curve of the great roof and the row of doors behind the porch; walking round to the side, the long veranda shows how deep the building runs.
