A Worship Hall Before an Octagonal Main Hall
The Minami Hokkeji Temple Raido (Worship Hall) (南法華寺礼堂) is a Buddhist worship hall of the mid-Muromachi period (1393 to 1466) in Tsubosaka, Takatori Town, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on June 27, 1959 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey hall 5 bays by 4 under a hip-and-gable roof of hongawara tiles; 2 old roof boards, 1 old eave-beam piece and 2 old ridge-end tiles are designated with it; designation number 01441.
A Hall for Worship Before the Octagon
The Minami Hokkeji Temple Raido is the worship hall standing in front of the octagonal main hall of Tsubosakadera (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The main hall dates from the late Edo period; the raido is where worshippers gather before it.
No record gives its date, but the Agency judges from its style that it was built at about the same time as the three-storied pagoda of 1497. It was heavily repaired in the mid-Edo period, yet its main structure survives well.
Why It Is an Important Cultural Property
The Agency notes that a worship hall built as a separate building from the main hall is unusual, and values how much of its mid-Muromachi structure survives. It was designated an Important Cultural Property on June 27, 1959.
What to Look For
From the front, note how the raido and the octagonal hall stand one behind the other (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Worshippers pass through the raido on their way to the main image beyond.
Visiting
The raido is in daily use for worship and can be seen whenever the precinct is open. Entry to the precinct and access are covered on the Minami Hokkeji page.
