Todaiji Temple Founder's Hall: A Great Buddha-Style Hall for Rōben

The Todaiji Temple Founder's Hall (東大寺開山堂, Kaisan-dō) is an early Kamakura-period hall on the Jōin terrace of Todaiji in Zoshicho, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, whose inner sanctum dates from 1200 and which took its present three-bay form in 1250; it was designated a National Treasure in 1953.

The Founder's Hall honours Rōben, Todaiji's first abbot, who worked with Emperor Shōmu and the monk Gyōki to found the temple; it was also called the Sōjōdō. The temple describes it as a small pyramid-roofed hall inside a white-walled enclosure below the Nigatsudō, north of the Shigatsudō. Rōben died in 773, and the first memorial service for him was held 246 years later, in 1019; the temple believes the hall and his portrait statue date from that time.

Chōgen's Inner Sanctum and the Move of 1250

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the oldest part of the Todaiji Founder's Hall is the inner sanctum, one bay square, built in pure Daibutsu-yō at the height of the style. It is thought to date from 1200, in the lifetime of Chōgen (1121 to 1206), and to be the Sōjōdō listed in Chōgen's own record of his good works, the Namu Amidabutsu Sazenshū.

It began as a one-bay chapel. In 1250 it was moved and an outer sanctum was added, giving the present three-bay hall with a pyramidal roof of clay tiles. From outside you see a small three-bay hall; at its heart sits the one-bay core from Chōgen's day.

Why the Founder's Hall Is a National Treasure

The Todaiji Temple Founder's Hall was first protected in 1898 under the Ancient Shrines and Temples Preservation Law and became a National Treasure in 1953. The designation also covers the altar platform and shrine cabinet.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it is a modest example of the Great Buddha style, but values it as a building directly connected with Chōgen that keeps the style in pure form. Unlike the huge Great South Gate, it concentrates the mature Daibutsu-yō inside a small hall.

The Portrait of Rōben

In the centre of the inner sanctum of the Todaiji Founder's Hall stands an octagonal shrine cabinet holding the seated portrait of Rōben, a National Treasure. The temple dates it to the Heian period (tenth to eleventh century); it is a wooden figure 92.4 centimeters high, which the temple calls a masterpiece of portrait sculpture full of vigour.

The statue is a secret image, shown only on 16 December, the anniversary of Rōben's death. On that morning the names of the monks who will undertake the next year's Shunie are also announced at the Founder's Hall.

Visiting the Founder's Hall

The Todaiji Temple Founder's Hall opens only on 16 December, after the monthly service, from about 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for a fee (checked October 2026). Photography, sketching and flashlights are not allowed inside.

On other days it stands inside its white-walled enclosure, and you can see little more than its roof from outside. It is on the Jōin terrace with the Nigatsudō and Shigatsudō, so it is easy to include in the same walk. Directions are on the Todaiji Temple page.
