What Is the Tomita Family Residence North Tool Storehouse and North Bedroom?
The Tomita Family Residence North Tool Storehouse and North Bedroom (冨田家住宅北道具蔵及び北寝間, Tomita-ke Jūtaku Kita Dōgugura oyobi Kita Nema) is a single building joining a storehouse for tableware and a sleeping room on a prosperous farming estate in Takayamacho, Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture; it was built in the mid-Meiji period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 November 2016. It covers 48 square meters.
It continues the roofline north of the south tool storehouse along the western stone wall, ending the row at the northwest corner, where it meets the annex.
A Storehouse for the Household's Tableware
The storehouse of the Tomita Family Residence North Tool Storehouse and North Bedroom is a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) 2-storey Dozo-zukuri building. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that it held tableware and similar goods.
The roof is laid in Hongawarabuki, alternating rounded and flat tiles, which gives it a different texture from the pan-tiled roofs found on several other buildings of the estate.
A Six-Mat Room Looking Over the Wall
The north bedroom, attached on the south side of the storehouse, is a single six-mat room. A projecting veranda on its west side looks out over the drop of the stone wall, a room designed around the view that the terraced site affords.
On the east, a veranda connects the bedroom with the main house, so one passed from the house along the veranda into the bedroom, with the storehouse beyond. The registration of the Tomita Family Residence North Tool Storehouse and North Bedroom was made for its contribution to the historic landscape.
