The Banquet Wing Behind the Courtyard
Kyu-Kappo Ariake Naka-to (旧割烹有明中棟, also written Kyū-Kappō Ariake Naka-tō, the middle wing of the former restaurant Ariake) is a two-storey wooden banquet building at Furumachi-dori 9-bancho in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, built in 1924 (Taisho 13) and entered on Japan's national register of Tangible Cultural Properties as a building on 3 December 2024.
It stands west of the street-facing Omote-to, separated by a small courtyard and joined to it by a roofed passage. The arrangement matters. Guests did not step straight from the entrance into the banqueting room; they crossed a gap of open air, with the noise of Furumachi dropping away behind them, before reaching the rooms where the evening actually happened.
The roof is hipped and tiled with sankawara pantiles, entered on the long side rather than the gable end, which is the reverse of the front wing. Registered floor area is 140 square metres. Ariake itself had opened in 1907, so this wing came seventeen years into a business that would run for 109.
An Eighteen-Mat Room in the Sukiya Manner
The principal guest room occupies the upper floor and measures eighteen tatami mats. It carries the full formal apparatus of a zashiki: a tokonoma alcove, staggered shelves beside it, and a hira-shoin, the low writing alcove built against the outer wall with a shelf beneath a window.
What lifts the room out of routine is the handling of the details. The tokobashira, the post that frames the alcove, is a fat log left with its burls intact rather than a planed square timber. Beside the alcove a round window is cut into the wall. Both moves belong to the sukiya vocabulary, the teahouse-derived manner that prefers irregular natural material to strict carpentry geometry, and both were expensive choices dressed as casual ones.
The Cultural Affairs Agency description reads the room as characteristic of the confident spending of the Taisho years. Niigata had reason for confidence. The port had grown rich on rice and coastal shipping, and the Furumachi entertainment district at its peak supported a few hundred geisha, enough to be spoken of alongside Shimbashi in Tokyo and Gion in Kyoto.
Still in Use
The wing was extended in 1958 and refurbished again in 2022, which is why the interior does not read as a preserved ruin. Registration under the Japanese system assumes continued use: the criterion applied here, the second of three, covers buildings that set a standard of design, and the framework was written in 1996 specifically so that owners could keep repairing and adapting. The registration number is 15-0596, granted in the 108th round.
Since 2020 the compound has belonged to Atago Shrine and functions as the Sangyo Kaikan, the base of the Niigata Sangyo Cooperative Association and of Ryuto Shinko, the company that trains and manages Furumachi geisha. Young geisha rehearse dance of the Ichiyama school in these rooms. There are no visiting hours, no admission charge and no walk-in access; enquiries about group visits go to the association on 025-222-2237, weekdays 10:00 to 16:00.
From the lane you can read the roofline and the courtyard gap between the wings, and photography from the public street is unrestricted. The site sits about ten minutes by bus from Niigata Station, in a quarter that escaped wartime bombing and therefore kept its pre-war grain. Nabejaya, a registered restaurant complex of the same era, is a few minutes away on Higashibori-dori 8-bancho.
