One Locomotive Shed, a Registered Tangible Cultural Property since 2023
Former Kubiki Railway Locomotive Shed (Rolling Stock Exhibition Hall, Kubikino Rail Park) stands at 257-17 Nibanwari, Hyakkenmachi, Kubiki ward, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, a Taisho-period building entered on the register of tangible cultural properties on 7 August 2023. It is a registered property rather than a designated one.
The quantity is one building. The owner is a transport company.
The structure is timber, single-storeyed, tiled, with a floor area of 306 square metres. The date field reads Taisho and the year field 1914.
About Forty Metres from East to West
The plan takes the length that rolling stock requires.
The Agency records it as gabled and roofed in pantiles, running about 40 metres from east to west.
The floor area is 306 square metres. Against a length of 40 metres, that gives a width of roughly 8 metres.
The Shotokukan main house covers 1,169 square metres and the Takanawa Manor House 410 square metres. Both are buildings to live in.
Here carriages must enter, so the length is settled first. At the west end are a rest room and a store: rooms for people at the end of a long shed.
The record adds that it stands at about the mid-point of the route. For moving stock in and out, the middle of the line was chosen.
Long Windows and Clerestory Above
Windows are set high in the wall as well as low.
The Agency records a row of long windows on the south face, with clerestory windows above for light.
Long windows run wide rather than tall; clerestory windows sit in the upper part of a wall. On the south face the long windows run in a row, with the clerestory above them.
At the Furukawa storehouse, a window on the west at the first storey and one on the south at the second give accent to the outward form. There the point is how it looks from outside.
Here the purpose is stated: to bring in light. Working on rolling stock calls for a bright shed.
Low in the wall the carriages stand, so the windows gather high.
The Doors Gone, the Arched Frame Remaining
What was once there is recorded as no longer being there.
The Agency records that doors once hung at the stock entrance on the east face, and that the arched frame remains.
Once is the word used. The doors are gone; the arched frame that carried them stands.
At the Kannonshoji fuda hall, what it formerly enshrined is written in the past. At the Manpukuji main hall, the roof was formerly thatched.
In those, contents or materials were replaced. Here a member of the building is simply lost, and its trace remains.
The roof carries a king post truss: a triangular frame with a single post at its centre, a Western form of roof structure. The building is timber, and the technique came from the West.
Visiting
The shed stands at 257-17 Nibanwari, Hyakkenmachi, Kubiki ward, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, owned by a transport company.
Its name carries a rolling stock exhibition hall in brackets: the use it was built for, and the use it serves now.
The Agency closes that it keeps the history of the light railway within the district. A light railway runs on a narrower gauge than a main line.
A shed that held rolling stock is now a place where rolling stock is shown. The use has changed; that it is a building for carriages has not.
Opening and hours follow the operator's arrangements. Check before travelling.
