The House at the Centre of the Plot

The Ito Family Residence Main House in Ushita, Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture, is a timber dwelling built in 1891 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 12 July 2005.

It covers 259 square metres and stands at the centre of the plot, slightly north, facing south. The Zashiki, the formal reception rooms, are set along an L-shaped plan, and the entrance projects from the front. A Buddhist altar room of 1926 adjoins on the east, a bathroom and lavatory of 1898 on the west. The building was never raised in one campaign; rooms were added until it reached its present shape.

The date is disputed. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database gives 1891. The cultural properties booklet published by the Gosen City Board of Education gives 1804 and notes that later work reused old timber, which is why the house still reads as old. One date may mark the completion of the present core and the other the beginning of the family's dwelling here, but neither reading can be confirmed.

Why Alterations Count in Its Favour

The Ito Family Residence Main House was listed under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. That is a different instrument from designation as a National Treasure or Important Cultural Property, which weighs a single building on its own merits. Listing asks instead what a building does for the place around it.

The Ito family served as Shōya, village headmen, in the later Edo period, and the main house sits at the core of an estate lined with storehouses. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that repeated extension and alteration never coarsened the work, inside or out, and that the composed exterior anchors a large estate. Alteration usually counts against a building. Here the changes stopped at partial remodelling and the reuse of old timber, so the evidence of each campaign survived along with the house.

What Can Be Read from Outside

The south front leads with a projecting entrance. Because the plan turns a right angle, the reception wing runs back from beside that entrance rather than lying flat against the facade. Roof heights do not align: a 2-storey section rides above the single-storey body.

The Ito Family Residence Main House does not show itself whole. The rice storehouse and the inner fence stand between it and the road, and the eye stops there. What remains visible is the roof above the fence and a narrow slice of the front through the gateway. The proportion of the house that stays hidden is itself the lesson in how such estates were arranged.

Visiting the Main House

The interior of the Ito Family Residence Main House is closed. People live here, the ground is private, and visitors cannot step past the gate. Gosen City lists the property as open for its exterior only.

The front gate is the place to stand. From there the roof of the main house rises above the inner fence and the entrance shows through the opening of the gateway. Keep photography to exterior shots from the public road, and do not aim through the gate or at residents.
