Ninomiya Family Gate and Wall
Along the road on the north side of the estate stands the entrance the family chose to present to the world: a nagaya-mon, a row-house gate, with rooms two ken deep flanking the central passage. The gate measures seven ken across and one and a half ken in depth, and was first built in 1877 (Meiji 10).
Its present shape, though, owes much to a remodeling of 1935 (Showa 10). The entrance bay was raised, and on the rear side a roofed wall was carried from the west of the doorway toward the main house, turning at a right angle on a banked stone footing. The result is an unusually composed frontage that joins gate and wall into one continuous gesture.
Why It Is Registered
The gate and wall were registered together in 2006 under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape. A row-house gate already announced a household of rank, since the flanking rooms could house a gatekeeper or storage. The 1935 work added something less common: by raising the entrance and bending the roofed wall back toward the residence, the family gave the approach a deliberate, framed sequence.
Registering the gate and the wall as a single item recognizes that the two were designed to be read together. They form the threshold of the estate and set the tone before a visitor sees anything else.
Seeing the Gate
Because the gate fronts a public road, it can be seen from outside at any time, which sets it apart from the storehouses deeper in the grounds. The long, low gable of the nagaya-mon and the raised central bay are clear from the roadside.
Follow the line of the roofed wall where it turns toward the main house and notice the banked stone base beneath it. The bend is the signature of the 1935 remodeling and the reason the frontage looks unlike a standard gate. During the seasonal garden opening, the approach can be appreciated as it was meant to be entered.
