Dividing the Forecourt from the Guest Hall
The Rengebuji Temple Karamon Gate is a four-legged gate (shikyakumon) dividing the Kondo forecourt from the area of the priests' quarters and guest hall (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Despite its name, it has no cusped karahafu gable.
Its style dates it to the mid-Edo period (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Rengebuji Temple Karamon Gate was registered as a model of form. The Agency praises its bold design in the manner of a Zen-style four-legged gate.
What to Look For
The central main posts rise almost to the ridge and are tied to the side posts by curved, shrimp-shaped tie beams (ebi-koryo) (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Above the middle of the main posts sits a tall frog-leg strut (kaerumata).
Seen from the side, the Rengebuji Temple Karamon Gate shows its tall posts and sweeping curved beams most clearly.
