About the Takada Betsuin Great Gate
The Takada Betsuin Great Gate (高田別院大門, Takada Betsu-in Daimon) is a timber gateway of 1827 at the front of Takada Betsuin, a Shinshū Ōtani-ha branch temple in Teramachi 2-chome, Jōetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, and was entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2015. It stands on the street, directly in line with the main hall, covers 64 m² and has a tiled roof. Locals know it as the Betsuin Daimon or simply the sanmon.
According to the temple's history, it was built at the wish of Tatsunyo, the 20th head of the Higashi Honganji. Takada Betsuin burned three times in the Edo period and once more in 1958, but the Great Gate has stood since 1827.
A Three-Bay Hakkyakumon With Zen-Style Bracketing
The Takada Betsuin Great Gate is a Hakkyakumon, an "eight-legged gate" in which each of the main pillars is braced front and back by a subsidiary post. It is three bays wide with a passage through each bay, a large and formal type for a temple entrance.
Look up and the depth of the eaves is what you notice first. The bracket sets are in the Zenshūyō manner: Mitesaki, stepping out in three tiers of blocks and arms, with a tail rafter running through them. They push the eaves far forward and carry a big Irimoya-zukuri roof, which is why the roof seems so heavy for the size of the gate.
Carving in Unpainted Keyaki
The posts and beams of the Takada Betsuin Great Gate are Keyaki, zelkova wood, left unpainted in the Shiraki-zukuri manner. With the natural grain showing, every tool mark in the carving stays easy to read.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the gate as richly decorated with fine carving and jimon-bori, shallow patterned relief cut into flat surfaces, and credits it with a high level of carpentry. The patterning spreads across the timber like a background to the figures.
The temple and the Teramachi walking guide say the reliefs show scenes from Chinese legends and the animals of the twelve-year zodiac, and the temple names the master carpenter as Takezawa Shima Noriyuki. Finding your own birth-year animal on the gate is part of the fun.
Why the Great Gate Was Registered
The Takada Betsuin Great Gate was registered as a structure that "serves as a model of design." The other three Takada Betsuin structures registered the same day were chosen for their contribution to the historic landscape, so the gate stands apart as the one valued for its design and craftsmanship.
The agency points to the large three-bay hakkyakumon form, the Zen-style triple bracketing and the carved plain keyaki, and calls it a gate fitting for a betsuin. Together with the wall on either side, it forms the temple's face to the street.
Seeing the Takada Betsuin Great Gate
Because the Takada Betsuin Great Gate faces the street, you can see it from the road. Stand beneath it to follow the tiers of the bracketing, and cross to the far side of the street to take in the full spread of the roof. Some of the carving sits close to eye level, so walk around the posts before passing through. No official guidance on photography was found (checked September 2026).
