A Mountain Farmhouse South of the Hita Basin
The Former Yahata Family Residence is a farmhouse in the hills south of the Hita basin, built as two wings, east and west, in the separate-wing manner (Agency for Cultural Affairs). This type is found from Kumamoto Prefecture to southern Fukuoka Prefecture.
It is a U-shaped hipped building with a frontage of 11.3 metres and a depth of 11.8 metres. Its corner reception room is an advanced feature, but the frames of the east and west wings have not yet been joined into one, so it keeps the original form of the separate-wing house well (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Is an Important Cultural Property
The Agency values it as one of the few surviving houses of this type, relatively early and little altered; it was designated an Important Cultural Property on June 11, 1982.
What to Look For
Notice the U-shaped arrangement where the roofs of the two wings meet, and the position of the corner reception room (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Visiting
It is owned by Hita City, and no official information on whether it can be visited was found.
