The One Building From a Different Decade

Hisatsune Family Residence Ondol Room is a single storey timber building of around 1945 in Kamimiyanaga, Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2001. It covers 51 square metres.

Of the 15 registered structures on the estate, 14 date from 1924. This is the only one that does not, added roughly 20 years later. It records the moment when a completed estate acquired a building with a new kind of equipment in it.

It stands on the northern side, between the storage shed to the east and the rice storehouse to the west, under a gabled kirizuma roof of sangawara pantiles. The western half is a room of about 6 mats with a shallow alcove; the eastern half is the entrance. The scale is small and the character is that of a detached annexe.

What an Ondol Is

Hisatsune Family Residence Ondol Room takes its name from a heating system that runs flues beneath the floor. Ondol has long been used on the Korean peninsula: smoke from a firebox is drawn through channels under the floor, and the heat comes up through the floor surface itself. Unlike a brazier or a fireplace, which warm the air, the surface you sit on is the thing that is hot.

It was rarely adopted in Japanese houses. Japanese construction assumes tatami over a ventilated void, which sits badly with flues, and installing one means rethinking the structure from the ground up. Here that was done inside the corner of an existing estate.

Why the family chose the system is not recorded in any source we could verify. The Agency for Cultural Affairs entry says nothing about the circumstances of construction.

What to Look For

The feature that catches the eye at Hisatsune Family Residence Ondol Room is the offset ridge. The western room and the eastern entrance carry their ridges at different positions, producing a stepped outline called ganko, after the staggered line of a skein of geese.

A building this small has no need of the device. A straight rectangle would have done the job. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as an annexe with real presence at the back of the estate, and that outline is what the phrase is pointing at.

The western room has a shallow alcove. Shallow means the recess has little depth, an abbreviated version of the formal tokonoma, but the intent to treat the space as a proper room is unmistakable.

The roof is tiled, where the storage shed next door is roofed in sheet metal. Annexe though it is, the finish was pitched towards the standard of the main buildings.

Visiting

Hisatsune Family Residence Ondol Room stands on the northern side of the estate, so the roof and the upper wall can be seen from the road on that side. From the right position the step in the outline reads from outside as well.

The interior is closed. Nothing is advertised that would let a visitor see the firebox or the flues beneath the floor, and the grounds cannot be entered.

The north side runs storage shed, ondol room, rice storehouse from east to west. Walking that road takes in all three, and the character of the roofs shifts as you go: sheet metal, then tile, then the great bulk of the rice store.

Q&A

AOndol, in which smoke from a firebox is drawn through flues under the floor so that heat radiates from the floor surface. It has long been used on the Korean peninsula.
QWhere is Hisatsune Family Residence Ondol Room?
AOn the northern side of the estate, between the storage shed to the east and the rice storehouse to the west. The roof is visible from the road on the north.
