Former Monopoly Bureau Ajino Salt Office Yamada Branch

The Former Monopoly Bureau Ajino Salt Office Yamada Branch (旧専売局味野収納所山田出張所) in Yamada, Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, is a salt monopoly branch office on a riverbank whose office building and archive of 1908 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 28, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is owned by Tamano City.

According to an Okayama Prefecture Tourism Federation article, it served Yamada, once a thriving salt-producing district, and is attributed to the temporary building department of the Ministry of Finance.

The Two Buildings

The office building is a single-storey timber building facing west onto the river, a hipped main range with projecting wings and a gabled porch at the front; its varied roofs and white clapboard give it a bright, light look. East of it, the archive is a small gabled brick store with a segmental-arched window in its gable and dressed stone set against the brick (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each is described on its own page.
