A Meiji School Moved from Kumenan

The Former Akasaka Ordinary and Higher Elementary School Building (旧赤坂尋常高等小学校校舎) is a Meiji school building that suggests the hand of Egawa Saburohachi of 1910, moved in 1973 in Maya, Akaiwa City, Okayama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 2, 2018 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 268 square metres; registration number 33-0303.

A School Moved from Kumenan

The former Akasaka Ordinary and Higher Elementary School building is the 1910 schoolhouse of that school, moved from Kumenan town (Agency for Cultural Affairs) to its present site in 1973. It is a two-storey hipped building with a single-storey wing on the left.

The arched decoration of the main entrance, the cross-braced pattern on the upper walls, a round window set on the roof and an unusual form of roof truss all suggest the involvement of the prefectural engineer Egawa Saburohachi (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a model of design.
