A Gate on the Street for the Domain Lord
The Former Yunoki Family Residence (Saisotei) Onarimon Gate (旧柚木家住宅（西爽亭）御成門) is a mid-Edo-period gate in Tamashima, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, dated to the Tenmei era (1781 to 1788) and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on 18 October 2000. It is a timber Yakuimon with a Hongawarabuki tiled roof and a frontage of 3.9 meters.
Onari is an honorific for the visit of a person of rank, and an onarimon is the gate built to receive such a visitor. The Yunoki family were village headmen in Tamashima under the Bitchū Matsuyama domain, and the domain lord stopped at their house when touring his lands. The Onarimon Gate was built facing the street for those visits.
Here a commoner family kept a gate on the street for its lord. Kurashiki City calls the house samurai-style in layout, rare for Tamashima, and from the street this gate is where that shows most plainly.
Registered for Its Place in the Streetscape
The Yunoki Onarimon Gate was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The main house on the same estate qualified as a model of form and the tea room as something not easily reproduced, so the gate is the one building recognized for what it gives the town.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs makes two points. The first is size: among gates of farmhouses and townhouses surviving in the old Bitchū region, this is one of the largest. The second is setting: the gate helps create a street view that stands for the wealth Tamashima once drew from coastal shipping. Its value is judged partly by its workmanship and partly by the effect it has when seen from the road.
Kurashiki City likewise singles out two parts of the estate as architecturally outstanding: the entrance hall of the main house and this gate.
Corner Ridge Tiles and a Yakuimon Frame
A yakuimon carries its roof on two main posts, which hold the doors, and two shorter rear posts set behind them. The form was used for gates of temples and well-to-do houses. At the Former Yunoki Family Residence the frame supports a heavy roof of alternating round and flat tiles.
Look at the corners. Each corner ridge ends in an elaborately modeled Onigawara, the ornamental ridge-end tile. Kurashiki City notes that they sit at all four corners, so a single gate carries four of them. To see the tilework properly, cross to the far side of the street and look up at the whole roof rather than standing beneath it.
Visiting the Onarimon Gate
Because the Former Yunoki Family Residence (Saisotei) Onarimon Gate stands on the street, its exterior can be seen from the road. Face it squarely to read the arrangement of posts and doors; step to one side and the depth of the roof and the corner tiles come forward.
