About the Nishie Family Residence Main House
The Nishie Family Residence Main House (西江家住宅主屋, Nishie-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) in Nariwa-cho Sakamoto, Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, is the principal dwelling of the Nishie family, built in the late Edo period (1751 to 1829) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2003. It was remodelled around 1894.
It is a two-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a footprint of about 320 square meters, the largest of the nine registered buildings on the estate. It faces east, straight ahead as you come through the gate, and its frontage runs to about 27 meters.
The two-storey core is the heart of the plan. A corridor runs northwest to a bathhouse, and at the front a formal entrance with a Shikidai step and a reception room project forward. The Nishie Family Residence Main House keeps family rooms and guest rooms firmly apart.
Why the Main House Was Registered
The building was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the nation. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the contrast of three finishes: reddish-brown Sekishu roof tiles, white Shikkui plaster and Namako-kabe tile cladding. Together they give a lively, showy exterior that anchors the whole estate.
The shikidai entrance ties the house to its public role. In the Edo period the Nishie family served as district headmen and their home doubled as the local office of the shogunate's intendant, and the owners count this entrance among the features of that office. The Nishie Family Residence Main House was both a family home and a place of local government.
Two dates circulate. The owners and the city tourism association date the estate's buildings to 1704 to 1715, while the Agency's register places this house in the late Edo period and notes the remodelling around 1894. What you see today has passed through that Meiji rebuild.
What to Look For
Start with the facade. Roof tiles, plaster and namako cladding stack one above another, and the smooth plaster and the tiled panels catch light differently even though both read as white. The house faces east, so in the morning the sun falls square on the front and the grid of the namako joints stands out sharply.
Then look at the entrance. The raised wooden shikidai step was meant for officials and high-ranking guests. Because the reception room juts out alongside it, visitors could be received without passing through the family's own rooms.
Takahashi City's heritage notes describe the Nishie family's rear reception rooms as rebuilt in the Meiji era with choice woods, including cherry, zelkova, pine, cypress, black persimmon and maple, finished with a coating of bengala and soot. Published sources do not say whether this was part of the 1894 remodelling of the Nishie Family Residence Main House, but the reddish tone of posts and fittings is worth noticing inside.
Visiting the Main House
You can go inside the Nishie Family Residence Main House on a booked tour. The owners list the main house among the parts of the estate open to visitors, along with the site of the hearing court, the village granary, the garden and the museum. The family still lives here, so follow the staff on which rooms are shown.
Phone photography is allowed, but exhibits may not be photographed and commercial shoots are not permitted; staff point out where the buildings can be photographed after you enter. Socks are required indoors.
