A Four-Metre Weir Feeding a Mountain Canal
Not every part of a hydroelectric scheme is monumental. The Oro-tani-gawa Intake Weir (Orotanigawa Shusui Entei) is a compact structure, just 4.2 metres wide across the stream and 2.1 metres high, thrown across the Oro-tani-gawa, a small right-bank tributary of the Yoshii River. Its job is modest but essential: it catches the flow of this side stream and diverts it into a branch canal that joins the main headrace of the Okutsu Power Station south of the plant's No. 4 Aqueduct. Every litre it captures adds to the water eventually turning the turbines.
The weir was built in 1932 by Chugoku Godo Denki as part of the same power scheme in the Shimosaihara area of Kagamino, northern Okayama.
