A Hall on the Terrace

The Ryujoin Main Hall stands on a terrace at the foot of a hill, a single-storey timber hall 13.6 by 12.2 metres under a round-tiled hip-and-gable roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

It has a six-room plan in the abbot's-quarters style, with a formal entrance two bays wide at the south-east under a cusped gable, and its gable carvings of guardian lion-dogs and tigers are typical of the late Edo period (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes its late Edo design on its hillside terrace, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
