A Porch That Outlived Its School
The Former Kunigami Agricultural School Entrance Porch (旧国頭農学校玄関, Kyū Kunigami Nōgakkō Genkan, also transliterated Kyuu Kunigami Nougakkou Genkan) stands on the campus of Okinawa Prefectural Hokubu Agricultural and Forestry High School in Umusa, Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture. Built in 1902 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 3 August 2006, it is a single structure covering just 9.4 square metres.
Nine and a half square metres. That is the entire listed property: a roofed porch with open sides, four square posts, and nothing else. The school it once welcomed pupils into no longer exists.
Okinawa lost most of its pre-war architecture in 1945. Wooden school buildings burned, temples collapsed, and the documentary record went with them. What survives from the Meiji era on the main island can be counted without much effort, and this porch belongs on that short list.
The School Behind the Name
The institution began in April 1902 as an agricultural school funded jointly by the magiri districts of Kunigami County, opened in what was then Nago Village. Its first principal was Kuroiwa Hisashi, a naturalist who had arrived in Okinawa a decade earlier as a teacher at the normal school and who is remembered separately for his botanical surveys of the Ryukyu Islands.
The school passed to prefectural control and took the name Okinawa Prefectural Kunigami Agricultural School in 1911. Five years later, a round of consolidation under a cost-cutting governor merged it with two other county agricultural schools and moved the whole operation south to Kadena. The Battle of Okinawa closed the successor institution permanently in 1945.
Hokubu Agricultural and Forestry High School opened in January 1946 as a fresh start, relocating to Nago in 1949. The porch reached its present position in 1965, moved onto the campus of the school that traces its lineage back to the 1902 foundation. The building and the institution had been separated for half a century by then.
Reading the Carpentry
The porch uses a karahafu, the undulating cusped gable that Japanese carpenters reserved for entrances of consequence. Its front bay spans 3.6 metres. Above the square posts sit daito bearing blocks and sanebijiki tie-arms, which carry a koryo, an arched transverse beam. Board-cut kaerumata frog-leg struts and further blocks and tie-arms raise the ridge beam above that.
Look at the gable itself. Midway between the apex and the outward curve of the barge boards, the carpenter added ibara, small pointed cusps that break the line. A ogigyo gablet ornament hangs at the peak. Inside, the ceiling is sao-buchi, the standard batten-and-board treatment of a formal room.
The roof carries Ryukyuan red tiles. That combination is the point of the whole building: mainland Japanese carpentry vocabulary executed by Okinawan hands and finished in local materials, at a moment when the prefecture was building its first modern schools. Very few examples of that hybrid moment came through the war.
Registration cited the criterion of serving as a model of design, which within the registration system marks a structure whose form has exemplary quality rather than merely local interest.
Visiting
The porch sits inside a working high school. Hokubu Agricultural and Forestry High School occupies 13 Umusa, Nago City, and the campus is not a museum. Casual walk-in visits are not appropriate during term time, and anyone hoping to see the structure should telephone the school office in advance to ask about access. There is no admission charge, no set opening hours, and no visitor facility. Photography of the exterior is generally unproblematic once permission to enter the grounds has been granted, though photographing pupils is not. School open days and the autumn cultural festival offer the most straightforward opportunity.
Nago city centre lies roughly ten minutes away by car. Travellers already in the area may want to combine the visit with the Tsukayama Sake Brewery buildings, an Important Cultural Property group also in Nago, which give a fuller picture of surviving pre-war construction in the northern part of the island. Nago is about 90 minutes north of Naha Airport by car along Route 58.
